External Affairs Minister
Government of India

Namaste and welcome to the website of BRICS India Chairship 2021. The information provided by the site will surely heighten your interest in BRICS and its various activities.

In 2021, India has assumed the Chairship of BRICS for the third time. We congratulate Russia for its successful steering of BRICS in 2020 despite the challenges of Covid-19. And we assure our BRICS partners that India will build further on this solid foundation to make BRICS more contemporary and impactful.

BRICS is based on the spirit of equality, mutual understanding, trust and respect. It offers inclusive and innovative solutions to many longstanding challenges. The New Development Bank and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement are hallmarks of more robust international economic cooperation. Parallel activities at a people-to-people level and in domains ranging from culture to science, technology and innovation have also gathered momentum. In the last decade and a half, BRICS has made its presence felt in the important debates of our times.

During our BRICS Chairship, India will work towards:

  • Boosting BRICS collaboration with a focus on reform of the principal organs of the UN and international institutions such as the IMF, WHO, World Bank and WTO to reflect on the realities of the 21st century and the aspirations of millions of people;
  • Countering the scourge of terrorism, one of the biggest challenges facing humanity, by building upon the BRICS Counter Terrorism Strategy finalized in 2020, through an Action Plan;
  • Consolidation of intra-BRICS cooperation including on issues related to ICT, Water, Remote Sensing, Customs Cooperation, Traditional Medicines and Digital Health, people-to-people ties and cultural exchanges among others; and
  • Enhancing P2P engagements, meetings of Parliamentarians, Think tanks, Academic Forum, Civil Forum, Business Council, Women Business Alliance, Youth Forum and events such as Games, Film Festivals, among others.

Our team is working on a calendar comprising of more than a 100 events in 2021. We are confident that they would deepen and diversify the cooperation amongst BRICS members. As the world focuses on post-Covid recovery, India will make its contribution through its Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative. This would also strengthen our capabilities to work more effectively within the BRICS.

We look forward to a productive BRICS Chairship with the support, participation and contributions of all stakeholders.

Do follow this website to keep abreast of the progress of these shared endevaours.
